In a collaborative effort to enhance student health and sustainability, the Rotary Club of San Antonio South, in partnership with the Salado PTA in the East Central Independent School District, donated a new water fountain equipped with a bottle filling station to Salado Elementary School. The initiative, completed in April 2025 school year, addresses a critical need for accessible eco-friendly hydration options at the school.

The project was inspired by a compelling presentation delivered by a student in a class attended by Rotary Club President Rosie Ramirez. The student highlighted the dire state of the school’s hydration infrastructure. Moved by the students’ case, the Rotary Club and Salado PTA worked together to bring the idea to life.

“The addition not only promotes healthier hydration habits among our students and staff but also supports our commitment to sustainability,” said Denise Y. Segura, Salado Academic Facilitator. “It’s a meaningful investment in both our school community and the environment.”

The new bottle filling station is expected to reduce reliance on single-use plastic water bottles, minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals and plastics while fostering a healthier lifestyle for students. This aligns with a broader environmental goal to reduce plastic usage on campus.

Salado Elementary serves a diverse student body of 733, with 83.1% considered at risk of dropping out and 74.5% enrolled in bilingual or English language learning programs, according to data from www.schools.texastribune.org for the 2023-2024 school year. The new fountain and bottle filler will provide access to clean drinking water, supporting the well-being of all students.
